Welcome to South Rock Island Township

"The Government Closest to the People"

We are here to serve you! Neighbors helping neighbors!

Established in 1887, South Rock Island Township is in the City of Rock Island and one of eighteen in Rock Island County. The Township currently has an office to serve residents:

Town Hall & General Assistance Office

4330 11th Street
Rock Island, IL 61201
(309) 788-0496
Hours: 9am-4pm
(closed noon-1pm for lunch)

Assessor's Office

4330 11th Street
Rock Island, IL 61201
(309) 788-4513

Our goal is for Township government to touch as many lives of our residents as possible. We have certainly touched the lives of many of our town residents who are out of work, people awaiting social security, or those who just need help on a one-time basis. We also help newly employed people with the supplies they need for that first day of employment.

Senior citizens, youth and the needy are also a priority for us at SRIT. We continually look for new ways to serve our residents and create new programs as needed.

In both the Supervisor's and the Assessor's offices, you will find Deputy Registrars who can assist you in registering to vote, make name and address changes on your registration, and also get your Absentee Ballot Application. A few reminders – Be sure to read our calendar on the annual flu and pneumonia shots. There are also several calendar events that may give you information on services that you can take advantage of in our Town Hall.

Remember that our primary purpose is to serve our residents and provide assistance to those residents of SRIT who qualify for help. If you have any questions on real estate values or senior citizen exemptions, please call our Assessors Office, at (309) 788-4513. If you have questions regarding our Township programs, please call our General Assistance Office at (309) 788-0496 for information.

We hope that you find our website helpful and informational.

May the year ahead be peaceful, safe and prosperous.

Grace Diaz Shirk, Supervisor

Moderator Essay Contest

As our Annual Town Meeting continues to grow and attract new participants, we want to give young people a special role in this time-honored tradition. I am announcing the creation of an essay contest for high school students who live in South Rock Island Township. The winner of the essay contest will serve as Moderator at the Annual Town Meeting (2nd Tuesday in April). The Moderator presides over the meeting, calls for votes, and signs all documents associated with the meeting. To enter the contest high school students must:

  1. Be registered to vote in South Rock Island Township
  2. Complete an application form (available online or at the Township Hall)
  3. Submit a 500-700 page essay as a letter to all Americans explaining how they can be more involved in government

There is no wrong answer to the topic. The point of the essay is to show how many options for participation we have at all levels across many mediums, and to call upon youth to deliver those messages in their uniquely creative ways.

Applications and essays are due by the end of February. They can be submitted to the Town Clerk's Office in person at 4330 11th St.
